1998 Daimler Super V8

Hi All.
Just seen this on Car And Classic.
I fear it has succumbed to the dreaded tin worm and will end up being broken.
Allegedly belonged to Jim Bowen at some time.

MOT history checker is a wonderful thing.

Take care.

Seems the tin worm has appeared severely only over the past year and previous 112 miles.

Shame. If that provenance can be proven could be worth taking a welding torch to?
Super, smashin', great -- When he woke up after his first cardiac in a hospice and was told where he was, Jim replied: "Oh. You've not played Wigan Working Mens Club, then?"

(Still keeping feelers out trying to find Vera Lynn's Mk IX but fear it's gone to the great crusher in the sky)
Gone: '59 Mark I, '56 Mark VIIM, '59 Mark IX, '01 XJ8 Sovereign 4L LWB, '01 XJ8 Sport 3.2L, '01 XJ8 Exec 3.2L
Current: '03 Strange Rover L322
Completing re-trim: '73 Owen Sedanca 4.2L
Now being re-built: '61 Mark IX with 4.2L

That seems a huge amount of corrosion that miraculously appeared with only 100 miles travelled? Hmmm, I suspect its been building up for a number of years and maybe some "relaxed" previous MoT testers?

So huge corrosion, a Nikasil engine, 115k on that 5-speed box, no mention of tensioners changed or gearbox serviced but they are in "perfect running order"? I think the £2k asking price might be the tip of the iceberg.

Nice colour and spec though

Hello all, this is my first post as I am a new member so forgive any mistakes, I to have just bought a Super V8 in the same colour, WONDERFUL machine, and I think an appreciating one, its not quite old enough, but due to its rarity may well become a classic !
mine to has suffered with the dreaded rust , its in rear arch and back of front wings, I have to get it cut out, but the rest of my paint was a shoddy job ! so it really needs a complete new coat. I am not sure how far to go with the old girl ! underneath is pretty good £700 to clean up bits of surface rust, replace UJ's on back and an exhaust, but could end up 3k, only paid 6.5k but this takes it up to the max value at the moment I think! I guess its all down to how much one loves the car and how long you want to keep it !!
QUESTION I am led to believe there was about 2800 built, but is there anyway of finding out how many are left ??
does anyone know how to remove the rear door ashtray / window switch panel to be able to replace it for new one, and the steering wheel reach motor assembly on these please, mine is a 1999.

Hello Paul and welcome to the JEC the JEC Forum.
Congratulations on getting a very fine car.
You don't say if it is a LWB or SWB.
Production figures for LWB are 2387.
SWB versions are few and far between as only 76 were produced.
This site tells you how many are left, here's the link:
https://www.howmanyleft.co.uk
I've seen these for sale sometimes around the £10.000 to £12.000 mark but do they achieve that?(who knows).
I think it has to be very low mileage and in very original condition for that money.
The ones I've seen at that price are still for sale and have been for quite a while.
A car is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it in the end.
Only you can decide if it is worth spending money on and how much you value your car personally.
I believe they will have their time one day as will the Jaguar X308,they both are a truly wonderful car.
In my mind well worth the effort to keep.
I just enjoy everything about the car really, even fixing it when it goes wrong which to be honest is not that often.
In the 4 years that I've owned the car I've only had two problems to fix and that was the Power Steering Pump and then I had to replace a Coil Pack.
All the other things I've done is replacing things that I think need replacing(preventive maintenance).
Here's a link to the Jaguar/Daimler Workshop Manual which will assist you in removing the rear door ash tray.
You have to remember that your model will come under the XJR heading when undertaking engine or gearbox repairs.
Download it and then you can keep it on your computer:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1eBYqx ... Vk-onCkDWF
Page 2089 is the info for removing the rear door ash tray.
Hope that helps a bit and that you are enjoying your Daimler.
Take Care.

Hi Andy Its a LWB
Thankyou very much for taking the time to give your valuable advice and knowledge, I agree the couple up for sale on Ebay, have been for a while !,
I do love the car but am aware that my heart has cost me a ton of money on a couple XJS's and series 2 XJ6, I am getting older but hopefully a little wiser,
I will have to weigh up the costs and benefits of keeping it or tidy up the bodywork and move it on with a good knowledge of exactly what is required for the next owner. It has just been checked over by a classic car garage giving a list of "To Do's" just UJ's and a little clean up underneath, Then it is going for a detailed valet next week inc having the leather cleaned and fed, I may love it even more after that !!
I want to save this rare motor for prosperity, but not lose my pension on it !!
Kind Regards
Paul
