Power Folding Door Mirrors

A few months ago I bought some power folding mirrors to upgrade my XJ8 Sovereign. Fitting was quite straightforward albeit a little fiddly. The wiring is already present which helps no end.
All was fine until recently when the mirrors developed a habit of swinging out from the closed position and rather than stopping after 90 degrees of travel, they would go on until they were pointing forward of the windscreen like some sort of jousting knight's lance.

This is obviously irritating and if i'm honest, a little embarrassing. Has anyone experienced this problem before?
I stripped one of the mirrors right down to the motor today and I really couldn't work out how the mechanism functions. There is a small electric motor, some cogs within cogs and a soft metal casing. If there is some sort of clutch system I can't see it/work it out.
The stock answer seems to be that the mirrors get knocked (or forced by someone who doesn't realise they are electric) and this knackers the mechanism. I would go along with that but I can't see any signs of damage inside.
Any suggestions would be most welcome. It would be nice to work this one through and put a few pictures up of how we solved the problem.
