Number Plate issues

Further to the earlier number plate posts on the fitting and spacing of number plates i have had a queerie on the subject.
After the obvious police alertness on things legal, the usual few are spoiling it for the guys with negligible changes to plate information.
Fancy names with spacing and even reversing of letters is ILLEGAL.
The traffic police are aware of the slightest changes and are going to pull you over if it is "in their face" but the main worry is its an MOT failure if the plate letter spacing is not the correct order and the font type even comes into the equation.
So if you want to risk the odd letter, out of place or a fancy font the police do, if busy just warn you.
But with an MOT the guy doing the MOT check can, and will fail you.
So have a spare set of fully legal plates made up for the MOT test, a basic set at some shows is quite cheap.
A good idea when you get them is to keep them in the boot at all times just in case a kind Policeman wants to look the other way for a minute during a check.
You have no argument if you are pulled over for illegal plates, be seen to comply either show the legal ones or stick them on there and then
Then temporarily use the old double sided tape for the MOT to keep you legal..........its not a big issue to us but to the authorities it is the LAW.

I bought my wife a set of plates M 88 EST which I had spaced so it read M 8 BEST. (Our surname being BEST).

She did a naughty like turning left when she shouldn't have done giving the following police car reason to pull her up. They photographed the plate, gave her a warning or get fined up to £1000. I then had to replace the plates with the correct spacing and then take the car to an MOT testing centre to get it certified that all was correct. She then had to take docs. to the local police station for verification.

This was a good few years ago and needless to say she is too frightened to put the name plate back again.

Can anyone advise whether it is legal (both road-wise and for MOT) to have number plates with a "personal" logo on the left hand side where the EU/National Flag is often placed? I am considering having my home rugby club badge (with no background colour) - but being a law abiding citizen etc etc!!!

Mike if you can find a number plate site (Show Plate Shop) is one
which allows you to send an alternative design other than the ones they have on offer.....Re your family crest or a cartoon character as long as it goes in the prescribed area same as the recommended ones.......then get a copy of your clubs badge and then send it to them.........i had the Daimler one done on my plates, as per usual its mostly USA cars that are featured ......they don't recognise Daimler over the pond its classed as Chrysler......the 308 Daimler as we know it is called a Vanden Plas over there .....we got rid of that with the Austin princess and 1100 models......same with the ADAMESH site and the numberplate surrounds......you can can get Jaguar and Type R all day long but only SUPERCHARGED that applies to my car.

Mike,

I had occasion to talk with a DVLA representative some time ago concerning the legality of the "National Flag" are on the left side of the plate. Their statement was that the Euroflag symbol is optional BUT if you have anything there, it can only be the letters GB with either the EU symbol or the Union Flag (Union Jack). Apparently it isn't legal to even have the flag of St George and some drivers have been reported for displaying the flag of St George!

Hope that helps

Paul

Paul thank you for the information, it is of course good to get the legal stance on matters re your vehicle legalities.
I was not aware of the implications, but if that is the law it does leave us open to prosecution in some cases. We did have a visit to the South Yorkshire Police Headquarters and to go over the police helicopter pad ....we then had a sit in re the traffic matters with some traffic officers who did point out several no nos re number plates.
It does actually boil down to how busy the traffic officers are at the time they settle behind your car.........they are aware of the legal spacing and fonts issues with number plates........believe me. But if you, like me, are only slightly out of sinc (i have one number 1/2 inch to the left out of line) as opposed to some who turn letters around and change numbers with black tape to make a name .....then these are illegal. The numbers and the fonts are a prescribed formula.........if these are abused as some people really do go potty then a prosecution will occur.......i do have a bonafide copy set of plates always in the boot for MOT ect.
If you don't go being clever with police officers and your plates are within reason they will caution you.....if you don't be reasonable and your plates are changed with both font and spacing or worse.. they can prosecute, also confiscate that vehicle number then issue you with a "Q" number for the rest of the vehicles life........i did not know that applied to the country logo strip though........many thanks for that Paul......Joe

Thanks Joe and Paul. I was aware of the "spacing" issues - and have resisted the temptation to make my XJI 3573 read XJ 13573 - but was not sure about the "logo". I've seen quite a few cars with the PlayBoy bunny badge - but I guess some people will risk it, others won't. With speed cameras/registration number recognition cameras etc., it's only a matter of time until our motorist friendly government latch on to yet another way of getting extra revenue out of us!
