Car Polishes and waxes

The age old question has been revived again........which one to use?
Carnauba the "new" phenomenon car wax, the old method car waxes from Autoglym, Meguiars, Turtle Wax, ect ect.....its a case of yer pays yer money yer takes choice.........or is it?
As we all know the final result of any polishing job is the final shine on the car, but how hard has it been to get the finish you want?
Preparation is the key for the more established polishers, removing the old wax, possibly "claying" the surface to give that smooth area to apply the finishing polish. Then there is the now well tried Autoglym resin polish that removes the old polish as you apply the new. That was in its time the best on the market so im led to believe, however there was (and still is) the downside of all the white powder residue left in the chrome bits and black corners. So we are aware of the old methods, but carnauba wax seems like a new version of the old methods using the same preparation.
But everyone who likes the final shine doesn't always like the preparation.
Ive noticed this new trend towards the PTFE polish that is TEFLON based.
This so called wonder polish makes it easier for the guys who like the finish and don't want to repolish their cars within a month or two.
It states that the preparation is a simple procedure of cleaning first and then "wiping" the ptfe on. The amazing result (allegedly) is fantastic a high gloss shine that repels all dirt and grime for yonks..........
Now im your fan of a shine on the car and i don't mind the hard work in getting one, so maybe the Caruba is my preference....right now im with Meguiars products they have served me well recently....but the "getting older" bit is creeping in.....is this new PTFE the answer for all us aging polishers...........has anyone tried it yet?...........
There is of course a downside to any "wonder cure" that is if you use PTFE and want to have the car or any panels resprayed later it does become a problem for the poor guy who has to paint the car........ANYONE?.........Joe

Its ok guys ive bought some.........i tried it and the results are good even on a car which normally is well polished all the time........i like the result so on a car that doesn't get quite the same attention the results would be even better.........its one of those things where washing the car now for 4-5 times will really bring on the finish you want.......cost on E Bay £14 + P&p Harly Wax is the polish a solid block of carnauba wax just like the old Smonize block was but its yellow.........Joe

What have you bought - Carnauba wax or the PTFE polish?

Paul ....Carnauba wax..Harly Wax.......a solid block similar to the old Simoniz block wax if you can go back that far......its bright yellow and seems to be doing the business......it was an E Bay special sale the only one to offer the wax block....evidently the liquid form is a diluted type of Carnauba wax..........£14 +P&P
The PTFE is not a recommended type of polish as it makes any kind of re painting difficult to make the paint stick.......Joe

Just to finish the post.........i now have used the Carnauba polish and can say personally that after applying the polish and giving it a light buff up i got the surprise of my life after i washed and leathered it.......
Its now the real dogs wotsits........top result in pleased as old big nose

To add my "sixpennyworth" to this.
I use Meguires "Tech Wax" (the one in the BLUE bottle)
It is liquid Carnuba wax and is really easy to use. You apply it to a washed car with the supplied sponge applicator pad--the whole car all at once.
Once the car is done,you go and make a cup of tea while it dries and does its stuff.
Then you buff it off with a clean cloth and the car has a blazing shine !
Tech Wax provides the best results I have ever seen and is easy to apply.
Another plus is the fact that Meguires are a regular JEC sponsor and so, I personally, am happy to support them.
Oh......and one more thing.Its very economical....a little goes a very long way. My first bottle lasted just over three years !

Obviously it must have been a gallon bottle.........you old guys dont clean your cars as often as us younger members.........im just relating to a product someone enquired about.........i bought the real Carnauba wax because i had used up my Tech Wax........its great....Joe

I absolutely agree with your comments about the quality of the Meguiars Tech Wax product. Easy to put on and wipe off and gives a great finish. Also doesn't leave the residue associated with (some of) the Autoglym products.

Just one point though, Tech Wax isn't a carnauba product. It's an engineered synthetic polymer product. Meguiars do sell a carnauba wax although you don't tend to see it much in the UK - not even sure if you can buy it over here.

At the moment, I'm sticking with the combination of Meguiars paint cleaner, clay bar, crystal polish and tech wax. However, I will be looking at the results of Joe's carnauba wax next time we meet up.

Further to my previous posts after i had used the carnuba wax i attended Northern day and had a chat with Steve King the Meguairs expert ....he liked the finish i had achieved and he then showed me a new product that Meguairs had come out with......Tech Wax 2.....so i gave it a try ( although the carnuba finish was still on the car).........
Yes............ there was a significant change........so guess what....i bought some......but i suppose you never are satisfied...

Joe, did you buy the liquid tech 2 or the paste? I need to give my (Black) car a decent polish and am looking for the best stuff to use. On that subject, should I clay it first and then polish? sorry for the questions but I want to get a decent finish even if it takes me all day to do.

bmc123.......the Tech Wax 2 (liquid) went on easy peasy with top results.
But i had already applied the carnauba wax quite a while before hand leaving an almost perfect surface for the new application after washing and leathering.
So to start from scratch as you say prepare prepare prepare......start by first of all washing the car, then either clay it, or if you have a pal with a paint shop or equipment have a mop done. If this is not possible and you have a £12 buffer you can buy a "bonnet" that will apply polish as well as buff it up.......just put the "bonnet" on the buffer and use it to apply the polish Autoglym resin polish is one way, it is a slight abrasive but using it in this way does give a good surface for applying the Tech Wax 2.
After buffing the Autoglym off check for swirls then use an aplicator "bonnet" again putting the new tech wax 2 on.
Leave it for a while while you do the rest of the car then when it has done its job buff off.........its then up to you if are satisfied with the result.
If not the only way is to do it again......best of luck ....but its worth it
