dipstick oil level readings

The handbook for my 1999 V8 3.2 XJSport states that engine oil level readings should be taken either when the engine is cold or after having waited min. two minutes after engine turn off.

I have found that two significantly different readings are show. The cold engine reading is well over maximum whereas the 'wait two minutes' method shows a reading about maximum. Oil is synthetic and about 2000 miles old.

Which is correct?

No oil in any engine should be over the Max mark. I would drain some out until it's just below. It's allso best to check it when cold. Sorry that this post is a bit late but I was just ficking through the BB's
