Re: Dynamators & electronic ignition.
Hi, in the 'supplementary information to section P 'electrical and instruments' (page P-s. eight) in the service manual there is reference in the description of Horns-Model 9H to the Lucas 6RA relay and a brief explanation of how the circuit is energised. Clearly, my 1961 model 3.4 had this 'enhance...

Re: Dynamators & electronic ignition.
I have just fitted a Dynator alternator from Wosperfprmance. It was relatively straightforward. I fussed about the wiring connections to make sure I didnt get it wrong. I replaced the wire from the alternator via the control box to the ammeter and from there to the solenoid with new heavier duty wir...

Re: Diff input shaft nut
Many thanks for your further reply. I'm very grateful for any information I can get. This is the kind of indepth knowledge that isn't available from a workshop manual. I shall certainly make some readings to try and ensure that the nut returns to its original position as closely as possible, bearing...

Re: Diff input shaft nut
Thanks Norman,
I will take careful note of your comments. I know a firm that could do me some machining if required. Hopefully that won't be required but I'm always prepared for the worst case scenario!
Cheers
Brett

Re: Diff input shaft nut
Thanks for your reply, The car is a 1961 so who knows what might have happened in the last 59 years! The only clue I have is from 1992 when a former owner (Who kept extensive records-bless him) wrote: 'input shaft trouble' which was resolved by his local garage at a cost of £34. I have assumed that ...

Diff input shaft nut
Hi, I'm in the process of replacing the differential input shaft seal which has been leaking badly for a little while. I'm not very far into the job and I'm unsure about the nut that holds the flange in place as it is not what I expected. I thought it would be a castellated nut with a split pin. I t...

Re: XK head skimming limit
Thank you very much for these replies. I'm getting the head flatness checked out professionally shortly, so I'm hoping the result will just be a resurface. I might have a chat with the folks at SNG Barratts to see if they can shed anymore light on the composite gasket. I shall have a go with the cam...

XK head skimming limit
I'm in the process of overhauling the cylinder head on my 3.4 1961 Mk2. I'm checking the flatness of the head face. I might need to have it skimmed, but I know that a previous owner had it skimmed in 1995. I have no idea how much was skimmed previously or whether it had been skimmed previous to that...

Re: Classic Le Mans 2014
Hi, sorry for the delay in a reply. I thought I would add a few comments about this event to 'finish' it off. Firstly, let me say that I had a brilliant time! The adventure was recounted in the September 2014 issue. The whole event was really well done and I would definitely go again. I have a few c...

Re: Upgrading Mk2 3.8 brakes.
Hi, I can thoroughly recommend the Zeus fronts. I fitted a pair 10 years ago and I've just rebuilt one with new pistons and seals, at very reasonable cost. The company were very helpful. I also fitted stainless braided hoses when I fitted them. If you do this, also replace the rear hose. I had advic...

Re: 1961 Factory Tour film
Hi, this was previously available as a video. My brother lost my copy  I dont think that they have issued it as a DVD yet? Thanks for posting the link. My Mk2 was built in early 1961. I reckon it had already been delivered to its owner in Edinburgh when this film was made. What a labour intens...

Re: Classic Le Mans 2014
Many thanks for all of the replies on this. Its all booked and paid for now, including track laps. I think these laps might be 'fun' judging by some of the nutters shown on U tube, etc. It looks pretty much like a free for all. I'm going to go steady and hope not to end up wrapped around the Armco l...

Re: Classic Le Mans 2014
Thanks very much for the replies, guys. I've already booked the ferry- Portsmouth to Caen and we are sorted with the route as my friend has been to his in-laws house many times. I'm keeping an eye on a couple of web sites regarding the actual tickets. As we already have accoms and ferry sorted, we j...

Classic Le Mans 2014
Hi all, can anyone give any general advice about the above event. Ticket prices havent been issued yet, but I'm definitely going! I'm going in the 3.4 Mk2 with a mate whose in-laws have a house fairly close to the track, so I'm sorted for accommodation. I'm hoping to park the car in the classics enc...

Brake PDWA problem
Hello, I've completely re-done the braking system on a v12 E type. I replaced the PDWA switch as the original is completely gummed up! Unfortunately the new unit leaks out of the top of the plastic switch. I have replaced the 1st switch with another from the same supplier, but have the same problem....
