Re: Mk2 wheels & tyres
One man's meat etc., but if original size tyres I would recommend Pirelli Cinturato. I fitted them and consider them excellent. Good grip and feel. Remember, your tyres are the only thing keeping you in contact with the road! I generally work with the maxim 'if you change one thing it affects everyt...

Re: Suitable grease for sliding joint
The joint's a bit like a CV joint, in that it can accept some 'plunge'.
Probably to accommodate movement of the cross beam (and inaccuracies during build...)
I used ordinary multi purpose grease when I rebuilt mine aeons ago, has been fine ever since

Re: Carburettor air intakes
If you look at the intake area for the two pancakes, it's a lot less than one standard air cleaner! That means much (most?) of the gain of the 2" carbs is almost certainly lost, and you have lower gas speed to boot.

Re: Carburettor air intakes
Piman etc, Trumpets, if of suitable radius at the flare, do aid breathing. Mesh covers, of any flavour, ruin breathing and don't filter! The amount of debris ingested by an engine without filters is quite terrifying, and forms an excellent grinding paste when mixed with fluids in an engine. In the '...

London to Bath - recreated
Hi, Last year I retraced (as far as I could) the trip taken by George Eyles in a Mk2 in 1963. My elder son accompanied me on GoPro duties to record it for something approaching posterity. It made for a nice Sunday out, and proved an enjoyable 300 mile round trip. If you'd like to view it, you can fi...

Hi, A company recommended to me by a very reputable Jaguar man is Chesman's of Coventry (https://www.chesmanengineering.co.uk/). A good outfit, they do a lot of Jaguar stuff together with exotica - they had Ferrari stuff on their job list when I used them - and more humble marques. They rebuilt my 3...

Re: Mk 1 Front Subframe
Ooh, you may stir things up! Some say you should keep a car standard, so a Mk1 should behave like a Mk1. But... The single biggest improvement you can make is with Mk2 geometry. The roll centre was below ground level on the Mk1 and this contributed more to the poor handling (especially near the limi...

All,
Replaced mine (all synchro box) with a round one. No problems at all, although the change felt a bit stiff at first. It does get quite warm in use!

Re: Does your dash clock work?
Doherto, Good news! You'll now be able to revel in the 5Hz tick, with the smug feel of someone having a rare functioning pin clock. Leave it running for as long as you can to check regulation, as reaching the tiny adjuster in situ is nigh-on impossible. Mine gains a bit, a couple of minutes or so a ...

Re: 420 high pressure hose C27026
Hi,
I converted my Mk2 to 420 steering and had replacement hoses made up by Trident Hydraulics in Southam. Can't remember the price but they did a good job for me. Their website is https://www.tridenthydraulics.co.uk/

Re: Does your dash clock work?
Doherto, I was referring to bench power supplies. Some bench PSUs are simply rectified, so the 'DC' output is very noisy (100Hz hum). When setting up on the bench you need a regulated PSU; the simplest way to achieve this is to use a 12v battery (from a motorcycle will do, it doesn't need much power...

Re: Ride height Mk2
Hi, Out of your spring control options, the proper tool is the preferred route. However, if you wish to fabricate a compressor you'll need some large studding - I used M10. An issue is the angle at the bottom; this changes as the spring is compressed/lower wishbone raised so a flat plate won't do th...

Re: Ride height Mk2
Hi, Offhand I can't tell you front ride height, but on the subject of removal of springs you need a special compressor - you can hire one from Ken Jenkins. You need to remove the damper and the compressor goes up through the lower wishbone and is retained by a big nut etc at the top. When I rebuilt ...

Re: Lack of power, hesitaiton, lean running problem
Many years ago I had similar problems with mine. Problem traced to an extra filter, fitted upstream of the pump, which was clogged with so much crud it belied belief. I concur your measured flow rate seems a bit low, but likewise don't have figures to hand. About 15 gallons per hour, 2 pints per min...

Re: Excessive Free Play
Pat, Pleased to hear safety (for both front and rear occupants) has been improved! As regards rebuilding the joint, you'll need to remove the pinch bolts at the top (immediately above the joint) and at the bottom (below the UJ just visible at the RHS of your picture). If you're lucky, there will be ...
