Just to complete the story, with the help of friend we did dismantle the IRS, and I took the diff to AJS Engineering for a rebuild. With everything reassembled I'm very please to report that whining issue is resolved. I highly recommend AJS Engineering!

Many thanks for all your replies. In the end I did find a local pipe fabricator who used the original fittings on quarter inch pipe and my x350 finally has a clean MOT!

Hi Paul,

It's a brake fluid pipe that goes to the modulator - this being the magic box which appropriately directs hydraulic pressures to the four wheels.

I've got a bit lost as regards the part number, but I think it might be C2C28015 or C2C28016.

I can confirm that fitting the insulation pad (£12.48 inc VAT) did indeed resolve this issue.

Thank you very much for such a detailed reply. I think that the valve is ticking correctly and, as you said, it’s just a question of fitting the uprated sound insulation wrap. I’ll update the thread once this has been done.
