Just to round this off. Engine light returned and had further check. Downstream lambda sensor found to be faulty. Jaguar price was £384 for the part. Managed to pick new sensor up from ebay for £120. Now fitted and running fine (might invest in code scanner/reader for about £30)

Will get the car to the dealer for a reset. It's likely to be as you say. I use the car very sparingly - weekends mainly and just a few short journeys so will give it a blast

Would anybody know what the fault may be if the engine check symbol fails to extinguish after the car has started and remains on while runing although no other message is displayed

I have a 91k 2001 XJ8 with i believe 2nd generation tensioners. Water pump and thermostat just replaced and engine check by main dealer who say car is running beautifully. No noise on start up. My question is whether the tensioners will see me through a year or two as I run it only around 5k each ye...

Has anybody any suggestions to deal with 'clonking' on my 91,000 mile 2001 XJ8 sports suspension.
