Didn't the post-facelift XJS also have outboard brakes?

Presumably this would be either an easier place to start or, if it's actually the same as an XJ40's rear end, then at least the donor car would show you where to make the modifications to your older car.

In the last week or so I've started to find that sometimes within minutes of starting the car (1984 6-cylinder XJ-S) the entire instrument pack stops displaying anything. Including all the gauges and the trip computer. All warning lights still work though. Sometimes switching the ignition off and on...
