The rotary switch on the side of the gearbox is a fairly common failing, used ones are not too expensive.

Are you double locking the car, ie pressing the button twice? This is necessary to shut down all the systems. If you are getting the long beep the sounder is fine, (it's just a loudspeaker) and if you are sure they are all 'ticking' when in reverse then I think the problem has to be the module itself in the boot area.
