Re: Changing diff oil
Thanks Mike and Paul. The problem is that the blighter is recessed - you have to get at it via a hole in the subframe. Looks like only a socket would get near it. Or some way of using a 1/2" socket "the wrong way round." The proper "pipe plug socket" sounds the ticket, especially as the plug probabl...

Changing diff oil
My car's well overdue for a diff oil change (in the manual every 2 years or 30K miles.) Am I right in thinking that whereas the level/filler plug is a "female" 1/2 inch square which an ordinary socket drive will undo, the drain is a "male" 1/2 inch plug? The manual talks about a "pipe plug socket" f...

Re: Solar battery charger
Sorry - let's get this right - 2.4 W or 137mA @ 17.5V full output. (21V is the "open circuit voltage.")
Phew!

Re: Solar battery charger
Thanks for all your helpful advice. For the record, the output of the chager is 2.4 W (137mA @ 21V.) It's Maplin item N59FU on offer at present at £12.99, usually £24.99. So I bought two, one for each of my cars. I was actually more worried about the car's very sensitive electronics, not the battery...

Solar battery charger
Retired now and no more daily commute to keep the battery charged and sadly just scrapped a previously good battery because of this. The car's street parked so I can't get a mains charger onto it. My plan is therefore to put a solar trickle charger on the rear parcel shelf. The one I fancy is rated ...

A progress report and more advice, please. As well as the new fuel pump, I was able to get the two internal rubber hoses (which attach to the pump and are "crook" shaped.) I got them direct from Jaguar Classic Parts using the part number for the hoses from a XJ12 of the same era i.e. EBC4679 as the ...

Thanks for that. But I just need to clear up something. Re-checking the Classic Jaguar parts website (www.jaguarclassicparts.com) the EBC11365 pump actually shown as being for "LEADED" cars within my car's VIN range i.e. 667829-708757. (My car is 670628 but of course unleaded fuel. I simply missed t...

Once more thank you for your detailed reply. By the way, I should have given the car's mileage which is 142K so probably well into the "danger zone" for fuel pump failure! I will buy one of those pumps anyway, especially if they may be going out of production soon and as I plan to keep the car long ...

Many thanks indeed for your long and detailed reply. It is particularly worrying to learn that the pump may now be NLA. So I obtained a part number from the pump in question from the Jaguar Classic Spares website - EBC11365. But then I found it as still in stock under this part number at one of my r...

Mystery "low fuel" problem
My car is a 1992 XJ40 3.2 "battery in boot" late production model VIN 670628 which I have owned since May 2008. This morning I was visiting the Wirral, not far from my Liverpool home. On my return trip, the car stalled at a set of lights as I attempted to move off . I was shocked to see the "petrol ...

Fault cured
For other members' benefit I am posting a follow-up as fitting a new coolant temperature sensor has apparently totally cured the problem. Seems too easy but I did read in some trouble shooting notes always to change this sensor first. It only cost £9 and simply screws into the thermostat housing at ...

Engine stalls during warm-up
My car is a 1992 XJ40 3.2 auto. The fault has appeared quite suddenly. She stalled just once immediately after start-up yesterday but then no more problems. But when I went out for a short drive this morning the engine stalled at almost every junction and set of lights. I aborted my planned trip but...

Update Sept 2009
Thanks again for all your ideas. This problem remains unresolved however. It definitely only occurs in wet conditions. This was brought home when pressure washing the car (including under the wheel arches) a couple of days ago immediately triggering the fault which had been absent all through the dr...

Thanks for your good wishes and happily the problem easily fixed and back on the road! It was indeed the crankshaft postion sensor. I ended up getting two and also an igntion amp so I now have spares of possibly the two most vital ignition components to carry around in the boot. Scrappers are sellin...

BREAKDOWN DUE TO IGNITION FAILURE - HELP!
After five months of starting every morning on the button and super smooth running, my "new" 1992 XJ40 3.2 refused to start last Thursday afternoon in the office car park. The engine was cranking over nicely but she was not firing at all and the AA man found the cause as no HT (but LT present) and r...
