The confusing thing is the parts suppliers show the top side of the filter (the side that plugs into the gearbox) which is identical for both parts. It is the underside that is different as shown in the photos above...

A quick update on progress with this item and the final outcome. I took the washers to a local hydralic specialist who confirmed they are 1/2" BSP which I duly bought and took home. On closer inspection with a caliper the dimesions where slightly different so I started looking round on the Internet ...
