The car is back up and running!
I replaced the CPS and it fired up 1st time. It only took a while as I have been away over the holidays...
Anyway, many thanks for all your comments and suggestions.
Cheers

Re: Sudden engine failure...bad CPS?
So...a bit more info...I have also read that an indocator of a failed CPS is that the tacho needle doesn't move when you turn the engine over....
I have just tried that and the needle moves ... hovering between 6-800rpm or so...so maybe it is something else that has died...?
Cheers

Re: Sudden engine failure...bad CPS?
Thanks!
I believe I can source one locally (if not cheaply!) and it looks to be a relatively easy job to swap the old one out for a replacement.
Hopefully normal service will be resumed in time for Christmas!
Cheers

Sudden engine failure...bad CPS?
Good morning all, My '95 4l manual XJS failed me yesterday evening...I was sitting idling at a junction (after a longish drive) when the engine just died. No warning. One moment it was running smoothly, the next...not. It turned over, but wouldn't fire up. After pushing the car to safety, I ran a co...

Re: 4.0 AJ16 loss of power over 2000rpm
So...Update time...
It would appear that replacing the 160000 mile old fuel filter has solved the problem
It turned out to be a remarkably easy job - I didn't even need to remove the wheel!!
Many thanks to all who made suggestions.
TYVM!
cheers

Re: 4.0 AJ16 loss of power over 2000rpm
Thanks David,
That all seems fairly straight forward. If the weather holds, I should be able to get it all sorted tomorrow.
I'll report back on my progress
cheers

Re: 4.0 AJ16 loss of power over 2000rpm
Hi, Many thanks for your reply - very useful. I've read somewhere, while researching this problem, that the fuel filter is nothing special (ie not jag/XJS specific) and that a 'generic' filter will be OK. I've even read that even a simple VW Beetle fuel filter will work. I only mention this as I hav...

4.0 AJ16 loss of power over 2000rpm
Hi all, I have a '95 4.0 XJS Celebration, which has just started to show a loss of power above about 2000rpm. It starts fine (from cold or hot) and runs smoothly up to 2000rpm, though the rpms dip quite low (<500) as I take my foot off the accelerator, when I pull up to a stop. Above 2000rpm there i...
