Re: Rusty sills , scrap car?
Thanks for all the comments, but I have to say I'm dissapointed by the generally negative attitude. I grew up in a time when it was very common to see MK2s in a banger race, I have even seen several MK10s in the same situation. A good friend of mine had a MK2, 2.5 Daimler in the mid 70s, which he us...

Re: Rusty sills , scrap car?
Good news! I took the car to my local friendly body repair shop, who I know quite well and they had a good look at it and showed me the problem. All the rust is at the rear end of both sills, for about 12 - 15 inches along, :D :D :D the rest of the underside is perfectly sound. They say they can cut...

Rusty sills , scrap car?
I have a 1999 SE 3.0, low mileage and in lovely condition. I'be just been told the sills are shot and it will fail its MOT. The garage have quoted £1000 to repair it or have advised me to scrap the car. Has anyone experience of repairing sills reasonably cheaply? I plan to keep the car long term if ...

Re: Engine stalls when decelerating for lights etc.
Thanks guys. I've had a look at the throttle body and it was a bit gungy, so I've cleaned it out. I also found a lot of milky gunge in the breather pipe from the rocker cover to the throttle body intake, so cleaned all that out too. Unfortunately, I've still got the stalling problem, although the en...

Engine stalls when decelerating for lights etc.
My 1993 XJ40 4.0 ltr Sovereign is excellent in all respects apart from this annoying trait. When approaching a junction, or traffic lights, under gentle braking, the engine will just die. This can sometimes be very embarrassing, but on switching off, then on, she always starts again straight away. N...

XJ40 mental fuel guage
I have just purchased a 1993 XJ40 Sovereign, and of course, when I picked it up, the tank was empty. I filled the tank to the brim, and drove 35 miles home, at which time the guage had dropped to halfway. Next morning, on starting, the guage registered almost full, about right I thought, and stayed ...

XJ40 Cenral Locking problem
I've just purchased my first XJ40, and the central locking has gone mad. When I picked the car up, it worked fine, but since I got it home, it won't lock at all, just keeps setting the alarm off. I resorted to just leaving the car unlocked all night, but then it wouldn't start next morning, just dea...

Replacement instrument panel for pre-facelift?
My car is a pre-facelift 5.3, 1988, with the bar type instruments. I have been told the facelift instrument panel with the traditional round dials cannot be fitted, but there are after-market suppliers who sell upgrade kits for facelift style instrument panels. I think one of them might be Autostyle...

Hello from new member
Hi, I've just re-joined the JEC after a short absence. My car is a lovely 5.3 coupe in black with magnolia interior. reg 1988, only 88K, A1 nick apart from the headlining which is now totally shot. I've had her just over 3 years, having always wanted a Jag since my dad had two xj6s in the early 80s,...

Historic Vehicle Tax
Hi As usual, this Government is knee-jerking to the green brigade, without proper consideration. I know a chap locally who runs a 1970 3ltr Ford Granada, tax free of course, drives flat out everywhere and boasts that he only gets 10 mpg, I quite believe it! My Sales Director runs a 2.5ltr Merc Diese...

Change of radio
The Jaguar radio in my 5.3 coupe, having been ailing for some time, has now completely packed up and I thought I would take the opertunity to upgrade to a CD player. However, I can't readily see how to remove the existing unit. I'm a bit squemish about pushing & pulling too much lest I should damage...

Cadwell Park 2007 CLASH!
Hi I would much prefer Cadwell Park, and intended to join you last year, but had to pull out at the last minute. I live in Norfolk, so either venue will be a bit of a treck, but then, isn't driving what jags are for? I downloaded the web pictures of last years meeting, and I can see why you like the...

Correct Battery type ??
I have a 1988 XJ-S 5.3 and have had problems recently with the battery going flat. This may be because I don't use the car much at this time of year, in which case I might simply disconnect the battery when out of use. However, on removing the battery for charging, I see it is only rated at 50 amp h...

Hi I have not as yet been on a major trip in my 1987 XJ-S V12, main reason having been previous unreliability, mostly overheating problems, eventually traced to the secondary fan not being correctly wired. However, now that things seem to be sorted ( I hear you all laughing ) I have agreed to embark...
