Found the problem, a poor earth. Good enough to show current but not to take enough power. There is a screw holding a plastic clamp to hold down the wires under the seat. This provided a good earth. Thanks , much food for thought. I had thought of compressing the washer and spring in a vice using a socket but it seems getting the wire out of the mirror assembley is difficult.

I backed into my nearside doormirror whilst polishing the bonnet! The washer holding the large spring inside came off. How do I refit it please. 1993 facelift coupe.
