I found out - a bit of lucky guess work to be honest.

Dynamo Thread
Does anyone know the thread size of the bolt that screws into the dynamo that holds the adjuster bracket? I've just replaced the dynamo on my 3.8S and the old one just had a nut and bolt going through the dynamo (the threads were toast) - the new dynamo has nice clean threads but I don't have the ri...

Re: Vacuum Leak
I never worked for Ford but over the years have read a great deal about Fords achievements. Back in the 1930's Ford introduced flow line production methods which revolutionised motor car production and influenced the world. They even manufactured Rolls Royce Merlin Aero engines in Manchester during...

Re: Vacuum Leak
Simon, You need a miracle worker not a welder to repair that knackered tank - bin it. I fear you are correct. Lets see what the options are :- but firstly, tell us , was the tank under the front wing, same as the brake tank position only the opposite side ? Yes. 3. The other alterative is to try an...

Re: Vacuum Leak
I don't think I would bother repairing that, the rust is extensive so it is unlikely to last. Surely they can't be that expensive to replace or find an alternative vessel? As far as I can tell they are utterly unattainable. I could bodge a reservoir off another vehicle in position or get something ...

Re: Vacuum Leak
The culprit!

I've blanked off the reservoir supply, so it no longer leaks, the flap operates (but only when the engine is running) and it idles a lot better.
Now to find someone who can weld/braze a repair.

Re: Vacuum Leak
Well Simon, there's interesting ,as they say. The S type has two vacuum tanks, one for the brakes and one for the heater system. These are totally separate. EXCEPT they share a common vacuum hose from the engine to a T piece hose joint near the brake vacuum tank - which goes to the heater system va...

Vacuum Leak
My '65 S type (with an early Mk2 3.8 engine) has a vacuum leak which has progressively worsened over the last few months. To the point I'm uncomfortable that the mixture is weakening. The early symptom was the air intake flap would close fairly quickly after stopping the engine and now doesn't even ...

Re: Irritating Ignition Failure
Not all that simple, unfortunately. The car became increasingly difficult to start, again with a weak spark until it got to the point I became so frustrated with it I replaced the points with an electronic Hall effect unit coupled to a Lucas Sport coil. It's been utterly reliable since then. Managin...

Re: suitability of Mk2 /Daimler as daily driver
My 1965 3.8 S type is my only car. I do have a couple of motorbikes and commute by train - I live in the southeast and cars are pretty useless here! My mileage is not massive - say 5,000-6,000 miles a year with a European or Scottish driving holiday. If you can do your own basic servicing (oil chang...

Re: Irritating Ignition Failure
The reluctance to start was difficult to work out as it had all new consumable ignition components (plugs, points, condenser, coil, rotor and cap), the dwell and timing were spot on. The battery is fairly new, over-size, fully-charged and spins the engine at a good speed (fastest it ever has!) so wh...

Re: Irritating Ignition Failure
I have a very nasty feeling it is not.Glad it has been cured. Hope its a permanent fix.
It was very reluctant to start twice further - once to the extent I didn't want to shut it down until I'd got it back to its lockup.
I will try to restart it in the morning and we shall see...

Re: Irritating Ignition Failure
I finally fitted the correct new distributor cap this morning - to be fair, I did order the wrong one initially (I needed push-in rather than the original screw-in) and SNG Barratt supplied what I had ordered but they swapped it no bother; work commitments then allowed (in that I didn't have to turn...
