It sounds obvious, but did you realise there is a switch for the panel lights on the centre dash? They don't come on automatically with the main lighting switch.

I too experienced an ear-splitting squeak (accompanied by heavy steering) and it turned out that I'd over-tightened the clamp securing the indicator and overdrive levers. Certainly the nylon bushes shouldn't need lubrication.

You won't need to get the radiator out, but you will need to remove the grille. This'll give you access to the solderless nipple securing the end of the cable to the release lever. The new cable will come with a knob attached, if I remember rightly.
