Re: Steering Rack, can it be refurbed DIY?
Thanks for the two responses, most helpful. I should have said it is not power steering but the information is very useful. Nice to get a response too. Hi Alec, I know you have replied to at least one of my previous posts from last year so thanks again. I am looking for a bit of guidance on the rear...

Steering Rack, can it be refurbed DIY?
1969 Series 2 - 4.2 I have checked the steering rack prior to work on the suspension. On the passenger side there is quite a bit of play when I move the road wheel (when it is jacked up) from side to side. The other side is fine. Looking at a parts diagram there is a nut and a spring and I have seen...

Things are getting very hot !
1969 Series 2 4.2 The gauge that reads the charge from the alternator is getting a lot hotter than the other gauges. Any thoughts? Also: I have to drive with the panel lights on the lower setting or all the gauge's get very hot indeed. Can this be normal as they are very hot to touch? Where do I loo...

Re: Slow running screw on HD Carbs
Hi Alec, Thanks for taking time to respond, much appreciated This is a standard E Type 4.2 set up with triple SU's (1969 Series 2) 18 months of restoration later! So far I have been setting it up with the slow running valves ( the chunky ones) completely shut. So adjusting the tick over on the throt...

Slow running screw
In the SU Manual it says " that wherever throttle adjusting screws are fitted they, and not the slow running valves must be used to adjust the idle speed.
Does that mean the slow running valves are screwed down and left closed?
Setting the idle is then just on the throttle adjusting screws alone.

Engine not sitting straight!
I have re fitted the engine after a gearbox rebuild. All good so far apart from the speedo drive is touching the body in the gearbox tunnel. I have tried a few methods but have not managed to correct the alignment of the engine so that it sits in a better position. All the previous work was done on ...

Re: Front suspension height drama
Hi Alec, As always in a bit of a rush I had not checked the tyre pressures. The car has been off the road for quite a time. Having pumped up the tyres measurements became great deal closer to each other so that will do I think. Thanks for taking the time to reply. My next issue is that the speedo dr...

Front suspension height drama
1969 4.2 Series 2 gearbox rebuild winter project: I have just put the engine and gearbox back and everything is working well so far. I was careful to mark and replace the torsion bars exactly as they were. Measuring the ride height from the lower wishbone, centre of the main bolt (as per a diagram I...

Removing the engine & gearbox
I am about to remove the engine and gearbox from a series 2 E type. Where would I find the best guidance on this? I am intending to lift the car from the engine on a four post lift. Any best practice type advice is welcome.

Fluctuating rev counter
Series 2 - 4.2 - The pointer on my rev counter is not at all steady, bouncing up and down quite a bit. I have changed the points and condenser and cleaned all the electrical connections and checked that the rev counter case is earthed. Any ideas what the issue may be? If it is a faulty unit does any...

Re: Poor brakes and wobbly disc!
Thanks very much, that was helpful and good information too.
Sorted now having traced all the hoses and found a leaking joint!
Next is to sort out a wobbly disc. How hard is it to replace the front discs?
Any special tools needed?

Poor brakes
1969 Series 2 E Type How can I check that I have an adequate vacuum in my brake system? A recent brake test was not great and the tester suggested that the vacuum at the servo was not very strong. Having removed several hoses the vacuum seemed that same sort of strength even at the manifold. Having ...

Brakes - no servo ?
No power brakes! 1969 Series 2 E type; a car I purchased at an auction had no power brakes, the jubilee clips on quite a number of the vacuum hoses had been loosened, having made sure all the joints were tight still no power brakes. Were do I start trouble shooting to trace where the problem is. The...
