Re: Front subframe/ suspension bushes
When I rebuilt our MkII I fitted polybush bushes to the wishbones and the anti-roll bar as the original bushes didn't last long. I later fitted the poly front subframe mountings that rattled my teeth on our concrete motorway. it is now tarmac so they have gone back in! I have also fitted poly bushes...

Re: Brakes slow to release
Hi I have had this happen to me twice, first time I had used Silicon brake fluid, the servo seals swelled and the brakes locked on for 5 minutes before releasing. Second time the rebuilt servo locked on again and wouldn't release, a newly rebuilt servo worked, but they didn't seem concerned about th...

Overdrive solenoid switch not working
Hi, After 18 months of inactivity I serviced and MOT-ed our MkII, and half way round our first run out the overdrive stopped playing. Having checked all the usual things, gearbox oil level and power getting to the solenoid, and the operating arm to the solenoid apparently working ( I was underneath ...

Getting at the windscreen washers!!?
After 18 months off the road due to covid I replaced the petrol, cleaned the brakes and greased all round and all ready for MOT, the night before and an indicator wouldn't work, fixed that then the screen wash would only give one squirt and heat up the motor! This is the third motor so I bought two ...

Re: Gearbox and clutch options?
I had a worn out moss box, the bearings can be replaced but the synchromesh is part of the gear so can't be overhauled, I fitted a rebuilt full synchro box with a good overdrive and its correct bellhousing. It bolted straight on and the original coil sprung clutch fits OK. I also bought the propshaft...

E5/E10 petrol - What material to use for rigid fuel lines
Hi, I have recently had petrol pouring through the hoses of another of my old cars. My local pipework supplier seemed unaware that there was ethanol in petrol. From online research I found and fitted Codan SAE30 R9 hose, but it made me wonder about the rigid lines front to back. In that car I had pr...

Re: 3.8s steering box problem
I've noted your later post about fitting a steering rack. 18 years ago due to back and shoulder pains I was advised to replace the standard manual steering box with a 420 front subframe with the later Marples (cast iron) power steering box powered by an XJ6 pump (extra fan belt drive). I was advised...

Re: Caveat emptor
Well Mike I think you are being very unfair, I think it is a nice looking car or I would not have bought one 7 years ago and enjoyed it ever since, as have others, at least 2 others in our region. Yes they have problems but all overcome if you find the right people or do it yourself. As to aluminium...

Re: Caveat emptor
Well Mike!!?? Not too sure what to think, should I junk my MY2000 3 ltr Manual S type for a Mk5 or keep on with the S type, yes it requires attention from time to time, but twice this years we have had to leave our MkII at home due to problems and used the S type instead. My complaint about the S ty...

Re: S Type R Rescue
The corrosion looks daunting, so congratulations on tackling it. I have a my2000 s type and found only small pockets of rust holes in the outer sill which I repaired. A friend of mine bought 2 early cars, scrapped the rusty one and kept the parts for repairs, some of which I have used. I took a lot ...

Re: Wiring calliper bolts
May I add to this post, when I first built our MkII and put it on the road in 2000 I used Locktite on the caliper bolts. A little later on the M6 I got a god awful row when applying the brakes, I managed to stop on an up hill off ramp and found that one caliper bolt had disappeared and the other was...

Re: Rebuilding front suspension on a 3.8 S type
Hi I also suffer from a back with 'wear and tear'! I recently had to remove the engine and box to replace the clutch release bearing. I used two large trolley jack, with the rear axle on the ground and the jacks under the front jacking points I lifted the front to 40" of the ground to pull the engin...
